Tax Extension Deadline 2021

IRS Free File Helps Taxpayers Get Automatic Tax-Filing Extension

Extension Deadline Approaches for 2021 Tax Returns

Notice 2021-21 Issued

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service today reminds taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2021 tax return that the deadline to do so is approaching. The extension deadline for filing 2021 tax returns is Monday, October 17, 2022. Individual tax filers regardless of income can use IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.

Notice 2021-21 issued today does not alter the April 15, 2021 deadline for estimated tax payments. These payments are still due on April 15, 2021.

The extension gives taxpayers until October 17 to file their return, but taxes owed are still due on April 15. Taxpayers who expect to owe taxes should make estimated tax payments using Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals, by the April 15 deadline. Taxpayers may also make estimated tax payments electronically using IRS Direct Pay or by using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).

Taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the October 17 deadline may file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Form 4868 must be filed before the regular due date of the return. An extension to file is not the same as an extension to pay. Late filing penalties and interest will apply to any unpaid tax after the April 15 filing deadline.

Taxpayers can electronically file for a free tax-filing extension using IRS Free File at IRS.gov/freefile. IRS Free File is available to all taxpayers regardless of income. Taxpayers can also file for a free extension using tax preparation software. More information is available on the IRS website at IRS.gov/extensions.
